How much do you weigh on Jupiter?
 

  

 Jupiter, the fifth planet from the sun, is by far the largest of the planets. Jupiter has more than twice the mass of all the other planets combined! Jupiter is called a “gas giant” because it is composed mainly of gas, most of which is hydrogen, with smaller amounts water, methane, and ammonia. At the center of Jupiter is a rocky or rocky-ice solid core which has the mass of 10 Earths. The gravity on the surface of Jupiter is 25.95 m/s2. 

Using your ACTUAL weight, how much would you weigh, in pounds (lbs), on Jupiter, if you were able to stand on its surface?

Hints: 

  • First, use the conversion equation 1 N = 0.2248 lb to convert your weight into Newtons. 
  • Then, use W = mg with g = 9.8 m/s2 to find your mass in kilograms.  
  • Next, use your mass in kg to determine your weight (W) in Newtons on Jupiter by
    using the equation W = mg again, this time with g = 25.95 m/s

  • After you determine your weight in Newtons on Jupiter, convert it to pounds
